Description

Class Experience

This class is a novel study (Bunnicula) paired with an independent writing project. Students will complete all readings independently. Classtime will start with a fun writing prompt, include comprehension activities, then continue to include vocabulary and reading strategies. Students will be expected to read 2-3 chapters per week. Reading and writing assignments are intended for students on pace in grades 3-4 or slightly behind students in grade 5.

Students will be able to:
1. Determine how writers alter meaning through literary devices and figurative language
2. Recognize plot elements in short stories and analyze characters
3. Identify main ideas and specific details in reading
4. Determine the difference between theme and main ideas
5. Write effective paragraphs
6. Construct written responses that demonstrate grade-level skills of analysis

I am a reading/English teacher with certifications in gifted education and special education. I am also pursuing my MAE and am an avid reader and writer.

Required reading (roughly 30 minutes) and optional vocabulary and comprehension work.

In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:Quizlet

45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.

This book is appropriate for grades 3-4. Learners will not use any digital resources besides Quizlet outside of the Outschool Platform. Learners will not need to create any accounts to access digital resources.
