Class Experience

You've been taking some extra-curricular classes with the extra-terrestrials at the Alien Academy. You've made lots of friends and have really expanded your thinking about so many different things - different languages, different worlds, different cultures. And apparently along the way, you've gained a secret admirer. Someone has slipped love notes into your locker and you have no idea who it could be!

In this escape room, learners will work in teams to solve 4 puzzles, each revealing a clue that will help them figure out the mystery of the alien admirer. All the information needed to solve the puzzles will be hidden somewhere in the room, and I will provide hints if needed. WARNING: This escape room contains an excessive number of terrible puns.

During class, all students will be oriented to the task, open the presentation, and then be split into teams of no more than 4 to work in breakout rooms. This will allow students to contribute more meaningfully than working individually or in a large group. I will be going from room to room to check on students' progress and answer any questions they may have.

*A Code Sheet will be attached to the enrollment post. Please print that so your child can use it during the class.*

**To successfully collaborate, students should know how to go between open browser tabs, go between Zoom and the internet, and use Zoom features such as screen sharing and annotation (Note: Chromebooks do not offer the ability to annotate). If your child is not comfortable with these technology skills, please have an adult nearby to assist.**

***Note about class length: This class may take anywhere between 60-90 minutes based on how quickly the groups are able to solve the puzzles. I will be available to assist students for 90 minutes.***

SIBLING DISCOUNT: Do you have more than one child that wants to participate? Message me after you enroll and I will refund you $3 for each extra learner.

Maryland Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Eighteen years as a public school teacher in Maryland and two years as an Outschool teacher have provided me the opportunity to teach learners from diverse backgrounds with a variety of learning styles. I began my teaching career in elementary school, teaching all subjects and earning my Masters of Education with a certificate in Gifted Education from Johns Hopkins University. Later, I added both Middle School Math: 6-9 and ESOL Pre-K-12 certifications to my professional certificate. Most recently, I taught middle school math, working with both accelerated students and those with Special Education needs. Because of my varied experiences, I have many strategies to help all kinds of learners.

Math is my passion because while there may only be one correct answer, there are often many different ways to solve the same problem. Exploring those different ways and finding a method of solving with which each learner feels most confident is what I love to do. I like to incorporate hands-on strategies, games, and interactive activities into my lessons to make math less scary for reluctant mathematicians and more engaging for everyone.

When I’m not thinking about math, I enjoy baking, cake decorating, drawing, working in my vegetable garden, and sewing. In my spare time, I can be found hiking, kayaking, bird watching, doing a puzzle, or assembling furniture. I look forward to meeting your learner!
