Class Experience

In this project based course, students will learn with a mix of lecture and project labs. We will be alternating between lecture or discussion to build intuition and have a lab to put it into practice. During the class, we'll be learning about the core concepts at a depth where students will know enough to do more and research things on their own. We'll be focusing on principles not technicalities!

Classes will be structured with primers(Do nows) and followup questions at the end of lab along with homework.

In this class, we'll be making a basic web game to learn about front end programming concepts and the main, universal skills needed to work on popular web applications like Facebook or even Outschool.

Week to week, each session will be focusing on a lab but students have the opportunity to extend those concepts or code as they see fit in their own time.

Session 1: What is a website? How does the web work?
Session 2: Proper HTML practices. CSS conventions.
Session 3: Dynamic, Modern, Vanilla Javascript
Session 4: Events + DOM
Session 5: Handling State + CSS bonus lesson

Everything used in this class is free. We use repl.it to run an environment mainly so students can collaborate and so I can assist students. Repl.it also allows students to share their website at the end of class. However, students can easily host+deploy their own website though it's not covered in class.

The main purpose of this class is to have fun coding something real while also maintaining a level of rigor that can make students ready for a job in industry!

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
When I was a kid, I designed Neopets and Myspace websites and for the last three years I've been the lead instructor of a brick and mortar afterschool coding program in San Francisco. I've been private tutoring/teaching programming and math for 5 years now and believe that the best coders are also the ones who enjoy it the most.

In my previous role, I learned that helping students develop a positive growth mindset were key to a successful classroom and, thankfully, coding is one of the best ways to do that. I love helping my students grow not just as engineers but as people who are empowered to do anything with the flexible skillset they gain while learning programming.

Before, I was a engineering/computer science teacher at a private high school in San Francisco.

As a result of my experience, I've come up with a lot of coding drills and analogies that make things simple for everybody while delivering the key concepts. That means we won't just be talking about coding but also about cooking, real estate, and more.

At the end of this course, students will hopefully want to learn more and be more willing to learn the drier more theoretical parts of Computer Science. Even if they don't, they'll walk away with the basic knowledge of how to work through things, take things apart, and put things together on the web!

Working in Silicon Valley, I see how accessible technology is and how most classical curriculum make you unprepared for the real world! By the end of this class, your student should be able to make projects of their own and hopefully even be on the way to interning at a technology company.
