Mystery Book Club - Continue the Adventure With Basil and the Cave of Cats
What's included
8 live meetings
6 in-class hoursClass Experience
Taking the first course is not a pre-requisite for participation in book 2. Mystery novels help to improve comprehension and critical thinking skills. They help readers to think differently and to pay attention to details they may not normally notice. In this class, learners will continue to explore the mystery genre in an interactive and engaging environment. The teacher will read aloud “The Great Mouse Detective - “Basil and The Cave of Cats” by Eve Titus. Basil is a famous mouse sleuth who lives in the cellar of Sherlock Holmes’ house on Baker Street. Basil admires and learns from his idol by listening at his feet and solving his own mysteries. In the second book of the series, readers will follow Basil on an archaeological adventure. Through discussions and activities, learners will analyze characters, use clues to make predictions, apply deductive reasoning, organize facts, and increase critical thinking skills. In addition to reading the novel and engaging in group discussions, students will discover the skills needed to be a great detective, understand the elements of mystery writing, and learn detective terms. They will participate in fun activities such as: becoming observant, cracking ancient ciphers, making cave paintings, learning about archeology, and applying deductive reasoning skills. Reading schedule: Week 1 Chapters 1 & 2 Week 2 Chapters 3 & 4 Week 3 Chapters 5 & 6 Week 4 Chapters 7 & 8 Week 5 Chapters 9 & 10 Week 6 Chapters 11 & 12 Week 7 Chapters 13 & 14 Week 8 Chapter 15

Hello, my name is Neda, but my students call me Mrs. Topic. I love to teach Language Arts, especially reading and writing. I am a licensed elementary school teacher in Canada. In my 25 years of teaching in public schools, I have taught all subjects from Kindergarten to grade 6, but I am certified to teach K-10. I have Specialist qualifications in Special Eduction and ESL, and I have taught ESL for many years. I have a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Ottawa.
Over the course of my career, I have received numerous awards for excellence in teaching, including the Director of Education Commendation and the Ministry of Education ESL/Kindergarten Lead teacher. I am a lifelong learner, and I strive to foster a passion for and a love of learning in my students. I believe that the key to education is the joy of discovery. Children have different learning styles and require differentiation to meet with success in school. It is my goal to provide my students with a well rounded education through an emphasis on academic excellence.
I am married and the mother of 4 adult children, and a grandmother of 5. My life has always been blessed with the laughter of children. In addition to spending time with family, I love to walk, travel, read, paint, and play with my grandkids.
I look forward to teaching your children at Outschool.
