A vast treasure trove of information about human history is currently submerged under oceans, lakes, or rivers. In this class, students will gain an understanding of the importance of what UNESCO calls "Underwater Cultural Heritage." We will discuss these key questions: 1. What are some different events which can cause the formation of an underwater archaeological site? 2. What determines how well or poorly artifacts are preserved underwater? 3. How do archaeologists get large artifacts out...
Students will gain an understanding of what is meant by "underwater cultural heritage." They will also become familiar with some important underwater excavations, and how researchers used problem-solving skills to do their work. They will be able to explain why some methods of recovering underwater artifacts are controversial.
I have a Bachelor's degree in anthropology from Mount Holyoke College. I taught social studies for two years at a private school, and was certified to teach social studies at the middle school level in Connecticut.
