Students will learn to play a familiar tune as well as its history, to recognize patterns of black and white keys, and to identify standard finger numbers. For most of the class, Dr. Nathan will be on the screen speaking directly with the class and modeling skills for students. Slides will be used for some of the class to illustrate finger numbers, hand position, and simple notation. These slides are made available for student use during and after class.

Students will interact with Dr. Nathan and the rest of the class as we discuss the origin of "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star," play an interactive finger number review game, and play portions of the piece together or for each other.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Doctoral Degree in Music or Theatre or Arts from University of South Carolina
I teach piano classes for beginning through advanced students. My undergraduate and graduate degrees have focused on music and teaching (B.M. Music Education, M.M. Piano Performance, D.M.A. Piano Pedagogy). I began teaching while still in high school but gained the most experience during the past six years while earning my masters and doctoral degrees.

Giving students the necessary tools to make and enjoy music throughout life is my primary goal as a teacher. Because of this, my students learn to play both by ear and from standard notation. Proper posture and technique is consistently evaluated to avoid habits that could restrain music making or cause physical pain. Lessons include elements of music theory and history to provide context, and students are encouraged to create new music through composition and improvisation.

Although I have always been passionate about teaching, having young kids of my own has made me even more committed to the growth and development of children. Music is wonderful to teach because it crosses so many divisions within society.

Besides making music and teaching, I love to spend time outside with my family or working various home updates.
