Description
Class Experience
When I was growing up, we traveled a lot, and I always looked forward to a new trip because my mother would buy a new stack of books for me. I would sit for hours in the back seat of our car and read. Whenever I ran out of books to read, I would read the billboards and every highway sign very loudly. That was rather tedious for my parents, so I'm sure that's why they always made sure I had plenty of books to read! Combine my love of reading with my experience as a reading teacher and my masters in Curriculum and Instruction, and I believe you'll find that I'm prepared and pumped-up to help your student's reading experience be the best it can be!
Students will have weekly reading assignments. They should be prepared to discuss the content during our sessions. They will be given vocabulary and fluency activities, and a culminating project (due final week).
I will provide weekly documents, links, etc. Students will need to either borrow the book, "My Side of the Mountain" (Jean Craighead George) from the library or purchase a copy. Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Side-Mountain-Puffin-Modern-Classics/dp/0142401110/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=my+side+of+the+mountain&qid=1551644167&s=books&sr=1-1
Participation and performance in the above activities and discussions will be used for evaluation. There will be no numerical grades.
1 hour per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
This novel is a story of the survival of a young man who is accustomed to city-dwelling, but chooses to leave the comforts and safety of his home and family in order to try his mettle on the mountain. The exciting and adventurous story deals with the dangers involved in living off of the land and encountering sometimes dangerous wildlife while doing so. Sam fishes and hunts for his food, so there will be vivid descriptions of trapping animals, killing them, and skinning them in order to eat.
We may use Quizlet and/or Padlet during the course of this novel study.
