1-2 hours per week. includedClass Experience
Each week, students will receive videos in the classroom featuring a dramatic reading of several chapters of the book "The Quest for The Diamond Sword" by Winter Morgan. Students will also receive instruction and guidance on our various projects. Students can follow along in their own copy of the book or feel free to listen to the story as they build and play in their Minecraft world. In addition to hearing the story, students will be challenged with different projects and activities each week related to the chapters completed. This "unofficial gamer's adventure" is an exciting tale that follows Steve through Minecraft as he faces obstacles and meets new friends all while trying to heroically rescue villagers. Students will love the familiarity of their game while learning new vocabulary and engaging with the book and one another in interesting and exciting ways. Students will post their projects in the classroom each week and can expect comments and feedback from teacher and other students. Week 1: chapters 1-3 Recreate one scene from these chapters. You can build it inside your game or in building blocks. You can draw it, sculpt it in Play-Doh or act it out in a video. Post pictures of your scene in the classroom and classmates will try to guess which scene you have recreated. Week 2: chapters 4-7 Solve a word search with vocabulary words from the story and learn how to make your own puzzle. Post pictures of your word search to the classroom and classmates will try to find your hidden words. Week 3: chapters 8-10 Write a letter to Winter Morgan, the author of our story to share your favorite part of the story so far. Post your favorite part to the classroom and classmates will give their opinions as well. Bonus challenge this week: In your Minecraft game, create a statue of one of the mobs Steve and his friends have battled so far Week 4: chapters 11-14 Learn about acrostic poetry, then choose a favorite character from the story and write an acrostic poem about them. Post your poem to the classroom and classmates will try to figure out who is your favorite. Week 5: chapters 15-18 Write or tell us on video an alternative ending for the story. Post your ending to the classroom and classmates can enjoy how you think the story should wrap up. All versions of Minecraft will work for this class. In fact, students with no Minecraft are welcome to join. In place of Minecraft builds, students can submit drawings or block builds. I look forward to seeing you in class soon!
