Are kids to young to earn money? No way! Your tween and teen years are a great time to learn and practice entrepreneurial skills that can benefit you throughout your entire life. In this one-time class, we'll explore various ways to earn income as a teen including starting your own business. We'll explore issues related to working as a teen that are important to know such as paying taxes, protecting your privacy, staying safe and balancing work and school. We'll also discuss how to discuss your ideas with your family, market/advertise your business and use your earnings to save for the future. Examples of topics we will discuss include: What are some ways to earn money as a teen? How do I balance working or starting a business with school and other responsibilities? How can I start my own business? Should I start a business on my own or with a friend? Do I have to pay taxes if I'm not 18? How can I get customers for my business? How can I stay safe while working in the community or online? How do I get a job? What are ways to earn passive income as a teen? A combination lecture and open discussion is my favorite way to teach. This format allows learners to take in new information, ask questions, make connections to their own experiences and learn from one another. Students are encouraged to contribute to share their thoughts through discussion or by typing in the chat box. Don’t worry there is no pressure to share if you are not feeling it. However, great questions or comments often lead to really interesting conversations and further learning so please, ask away! This class is a part of my series "My Mind on My Money" which delves into a variety of financial topics for teens. While there is no prerequisite for this class, it is best if learners have some financial knowledge (spending vs. saving, savings accounts, etc.). If you are looking for an introduction to the basics of financial independence, you can check out my class "My Mind on My Money: A Teen Guide to Financial Independence." https://outschool.com/classes/my-mind-on-my-money-a-teen-guide-to-financial-independence-PaU0FIOt?usid=7xIIHsRK&signup=true&utm_campaign=share_activity_link If your learner is interested in making money specifically by investing in stocks, cryptocurrency, etc. "My Mind on My Money: A Teen Guide to Investing" may be a better fit. More information on that course can be found here: https://outschool.com/classes/my-mind-on-my-money-a-teen-guide-to-financial-independence-level-2-7pSWvCj3?usid=7xIIHsRK&signup=true&utm_campaign=share_activity_link If you are not sure which course is best for your learner, please feel free to send me a message describing your learner's current experience level and financial goals and I will be happy to make a recommendation.

Teacher expertise and credentials
North Carolina Teaching Certificate in Social Studies/History
I am a licensed social studies educator and homeschooling parent with a passion for personal finance. I am certified to teach economics, and have a strong knowledge in debt reduction strategies, budgeting and saving. Over the past few years I have educated myself on the principles of Financial Independence and our family is now debt free! When it comes to income, I have a lot of research and life experience to share. In particular, I earned money as a teen in a variety of ways and currently own my own educational consulting company. I also founded a successful local branch of a non-profit organization in my community. I wish someone had shared more financial tips with me when I was younger and I am excited about sharing what I have learned with you!
Having fun while we learn is so important! I focus on keeping the classroom environment accepting of all students while delving into these important topics.
