Let's learn to sew on a sewing machine! In this one-time class, we will get to know your very first sewing machine. This class is for students who are just beginning to learn to sew with a sewing machine. Whether you've just cracked open the box or you've already started experimenting, this class is for you. No prior sewing machine use is required however, students must have a full sized sewing machine available for use during class. (Please no "mini" or child sewing machines) This is a hands-on course where students will be identifying the parts of their own sewing machines and learning their functions right along with me. All brands of sewing machines are welcome! Please have your owners manual handy in case there is need for reference. Students should be ready for class with their machines plugged in, a spool of thread and bobbin at hand. This class is for students aged 7-9. There will be two camera views for this class, one close up of my machine, and another further away so students can see my face and are able to confidently interact and ask quesitons. Class Overview: - Students will introduce themselves and share what type of machine they are working on, as well as any prior experience sewing or operating their machine. There will also be a fun icebreaker activity to jump start getting to know your new machine! - We will begin by addressing basing sewing machine safety. - We will identify the essential parts of our sewing machines and discuss thier functions. Students will be able to point out & operate each part on their own sewing machines. - We will learn how to wind a bobbin of thread from our thread spool. - We will learn how to thread our machines to prepare for sewing. - Students will practice stitching on provided printable worksheets. (Yes it is perfectly safe to sew through paper!) - Students will practice stitching on prepared pieces of fabric to better understand their machine settings. We will discuss different types of stitches, focusing on the two stiches you can use to make just about anything! I will do my best to help your child troubleshoot any issues that may pop up with their machine throughout this course. Please know that some issues may be very difficult to address virtually. In some cases we may have to move forward in the interest of time in order to cover all materials & topics. Your child will still get the benefit of viewing all the class content, and if time allows we will revisit specific machine issues at the end of class. This is a fun and interactive course where students are welcome to leave their audio unmuted to ask questions and share their sewing machine functions along the way. Please make sure that your child is able to be close to their sewing machine while participating in class. Printable materials included in this course: - Sewing machine parts diagram - Bobbin loading Examples - How to thread your machine diagram - Stitch practice worksheets All materials should be printed and nearby before class starts.
Learning Goals
It is my goal that your learner will come away from this course feeling comfortable threading and operating their sewing machine on their own. This course will prepare new sewers to move on to my other more intermediate & advanced courses.

Supply List
Required Materials: - Standard Sewing Machine, manual, and all included accessories - Sewing machine needle (should be already in your machine - do not remove) - Bobbin - Spool of thread - Printed materials provided in class - Eight 4"x8" cuts of cotton fabric for practice - Small pair of scissors for clipping thread Any brand of machine is acceptable for this class. Sewing machines must be standard-sized sewing machines, please no "mini" or child-sized machines. Please show up to class with your machine plugged in and ready to go, the owner's manual nearby, and provided worksheets printed out. If you don't have a sewing machine yet: You can find a great beginner sewing machine at Walmart for around $80-$120 (I bought my very first machine at Walmart!) You can also find great deals on basic machines at stores like Micheals and JoAnn's Fabrics which often have great coupons available. If purchasing a machine that will strictly be used by your young learner, I would stray from any machine with a digital screen or extensive features. The least bells and whistles the better. A nice simple machine will last your child a long time - you can make almost anything with just a few basic stitches! Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been sewing and making my own clothing for over 15 years. I truly fell in love with garment construction while working in the costume department during my studies in theater arts at the University of Houston. My newfound interest in sewing and fashion lead me to get an associate's degree in fashion design from the Fashion Institute of Technology. I have been blogging about sewing, sharing video tutorials, pattern drafting, and selling PDF sewing patterns on my website for the past 10 years. I have experience teaching both in-person and virtual sewing classes to makers of all ages. I have been teaching virtually to young learners for the past year.
