Description

Class Experience

Learners will leave this class with a completed journal entry and a stronger identity as a real writer. They will also increase their phonological and phonemic awareness skills, essential for reading and writing, and gain practice in writing letters and simple sentences.

Common Core State Standards:

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.K.3
Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to narrate a single event or several loosely linked events, tell about the events in the order in which they occurred, and provide a reaction to what happened.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.K.5
With guidance and support from adults, respond to questions and suggestions from peers and add details to strengthen writing as needed.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.1
Demonstrate understanding of the organization and basic features of print.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.2
Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds (phonemes).
I am passionate about teaching writing to young learners! I love the tangible growth seen over time. Over the course of a decade, I have taught writing to learners in Kindergarten through 5th-grade certified teacher (MA in General/Special Ed, K-6).
Optional: learners are invited to complete journal entries outside of class to extend and practice learning.

Learners should have: ✏️ Plain paper OR the printable journal sheets provided in the classroom ✏️ OR A primary writing notebook with ample space for drawing ✏️ Pencils, crayons, colored pencils (no markers, please 😀) ✏️ Optional: A folder to store journal pages. (Tip: a 3-hole punch and pronged folded keeps everything tidy and in "order")
25 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
