This beginner class meets two times, and will start with "This Is a Flute". No musical experience necessary. In the first class we will talk about the flute family, and learn a little about the history of the instrument. We will also cover: -parts of the flute -assembling the flute -how to hold the flute -how to clean the flute -breathing and the air stream -articulation -making your first sounds on the flute headjoint Each student will have the opportunity to play their first sounds, and ask questions. In the second class we will learn about a few famous historical and contemporary flute players. For inspiration, we will listen to some short performances and discuss what we hear. We will also continue learning: -first sounds on the flute headjoint -controlling the air with your embouchure (lips/mouth) -hand and body position -first notes with the flute -will will try some easy first songs The beginning flutists will be supplied with a flute fingering chart, comments from class, and handouts to review what we learned in class. The class size will stay small (1-5 learners) to allow each student to participate and receive feedback. The learners will be encouraged, but not required, to play individually and work to improve their sounds. We can try different approaches to making a sound, and find what is helpful for each student. The environment will be supportive and encouraging, to help the students gain confidence playing the flute! This class is designed for younger students, ages 8-12. There is also a listing for older students, ages 13-18. We will cover the same information in both classes, but learning will be geared for the age range of the students.
