US Grade 3 - 5
The students will read My Father's Dragon. This book is at a third to fourth-grade reading level. The readers will work on reading and comprehension skills in class. They will discuss the book with other students. They will practice explaining their opinions to others. We will also talk about the fantasy genre. The students will briefly learn about the different animals that Elmer meets throughout the book. The students will read one or two chapters per class. This will allow us to have enough time for discussion and comprehension questions. The students will be taking turns reading the book. I will ask that the students whisper read while the other students are reading. They will need to be on mute when it is not their turn to read. Reading along with others will help improve their reading skills. I will also add reading skills to the class based on the needs of the students. During the last class, the students will finish the book, have a final discussion. and draw their own dragon based on what they learn in the book.
