For my vocal coaching course, students would explore 4-8 genres/styles of musical theatre repertoire (depending on the preferred length of the course). Students would be sorted into small groups ranging from 5 to 10. Each "small group" would meet two times a week, working on whatever repertoire corresponds with the genre unit. Sessions 1 through 3 every week would consist of group coachings where each student would perform their song, get feedback from the teacher and classmates, and then participate by providing healthy constructive observations of their other pupils as they perform. Every fourth lesson would be the "final" of the unit, where every student performs their repertoire for the final time for each other and the teacher, ending with a group debrief, celebrating each other's performances. After each unit's final students would receive a private assessment of their performance, praising the skills that they have mastered, and providing suggestions for skills that still need more development.
