This multi-week course is great for singers performers of all levels. Students will learn how to interpret a song from first listen to inspired performance and begin to develop a method for working on material that is unique to them. This is not a vocal technique class, we will focus on telling the story in each song, and finding ways to personally relate to the material. Students should be comfortable singing solo and sharing their work via video posts, sharing their work in class, and...
Students will learn how to approach any song from the viewpoint of a storyteller, research and develop character, explore different vocal and physical choices, and discover how to make any performance unique to them. Learners are invited to share any specific goals they may have and as an instructor I can provide tailored feedback. The purpose of this class is to discover new ways to explore storytelling and character. Students will be able to apply everything they learned to other material in the future!
I am a professional performing artist and educator with classical and contemporary vocal training. I received my BA at Lehigh University where I majored in Theatre with Honors. For the past ten years I have been a teaching artist in the greater Philadelphia area in musical theatre, improv, acting, scene study, and audition technique both in schools and with regional theatre companies. I have teaching clearances and certifications in PA. My approach in the classroom is person forward and I aim to help all of my students find their creative spark and storytelling voice. The greatest tool we have as performers is our own experiences. All are welcome in my classes, the space is created with diverse learners in mind.
In between class meetings students will be given light assignments to complete on their own. This may include research about their chosen piece, looking for inspiration in visual art and music, or a reflection journal.
Students should have at least one song, memorized, and the music to work with. Sheet music can be purchased online through a variety of websites. Students should also have a backing track to sing with. These tracks can be obtained via youtube, spotify, or paid service. If you need recommendations for where to find sheet music or backing tracks I am happy to help.
Students will receive feedback from instructor and other learners (facilitated by instructor) each week. Learners will also self-reflect each week.
55 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Students will be choosing their own material to work with, I can be available to help give suggestions before the start of class. If you have any specific concerns I am reachable via the classroom page.
