Class Experience

In this course, students will learn dance moves/steps that are specific to musical theatre. This includes in different styles such as jazz, tap, and ballet. Students will also learn stretches to improve flexibility, and dance combinations to help memory. Class will start with stretching and a quick warm up, followed by technique instruction (1-2 new skills per class), then learning a short combination at the end.

Each combination will be from a musical! Musicals included in this class are Matilda, Annie, Moana, Hairspray, Frozen, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, and so much more. Some dances will even be the actual Broadway choreography. If it is not Broadway choreography, the dances will be choreographed by me (a professional choreographer). I will tailor the combinations to the class's ability.

This class is especially good for students who wish to improve their dance skills for future auditions. I will teach kids how to do skills they are likely to see at a dance audition, how to learn a dance quickly, how to act and dance at the same time (story telling), all while having a lot of FUN!

I teach with the "I do, we do, you do" method. This means I allow students to watch me first, we do it together, then they do it by themselves. This helps them retain information quicker. I am a very energetic, active teacher who intentionally encourages each and every student.

*No dance experience necessary; Just come have FUN!*

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Alli. Thank you for visiting my profile! I am a professional actor, singer, dancer, and choreographer in the Raleigh, NC Triangle area. I have over 20 years of experience in theatre and film, and have been teaching children ages 3-18 for about 7 years. My performance experience includes working at Walt Disney World as a dancer and character performer, Nutcracker Ballet as a mouse, and countless regional shows such as Newsies, Legally Blonde, Matilda, and a Christmas Carol. When I am not performing, I am teaching. I am the head choreographer at a local children’s theatre in the area called Raleigh ACT, where I also teach master classes in acting and singing. I choreograph for both community and professional theatres as well such as Raleigh Little Theatre, Gallery Players, and North Raleigh Arts and Creative Theatre.

Teaching is my passion because my teachers are what inspired me to pursue a career as an artist. It is not an easy path, but so worth it! :) I have a motto in my classroom that once I am your teacher, I consider you my student forever! This means long after class is over, I am always more than willing to assist with advice, guidance, feedback, questions, etc. I want to help my students in any way I can, long after class time. My mentors have helped me get where I am today, and I’m a believer in “paying it forward.”

No matter the subject, my teaching style is "I do, we do, you do." This means that I initially teach a student how to do something, we do it together, then the student does it on their own. I am a big believer in talking the student through an answer rather than giving it to them. As an artist, it is extremely important that kids use their creativity to develop a character and make acting choices. Therefore, I will never tell a kid to do “do it like this”, then have them copy me. Acting is self-expression, not imitation. Unless you’re *supposed* to do an imitation of someone, of course! ;) I am an advocate for self expression and making my classroom a safe space for kids to be free and be themselves.

In addition to theatre, I also love yoga, biking, spending time with my dog, cooking, being outdoors, and learning how to use TikTok so I can be cool like my students! LOL. :)

If you have any questions, please feel free to inbox me. And if you are from another country and my time slots do not work for your child, please reach out and we can coordinate something.
