In this course students will learn how to apply acting techniques in musical theatre songs. This is for Musical Theatre Students who want to improve their auditioning skills and prepare for Community, Professional or College Auditions.

Syllabus Day
Talk about course expectations, get to know each other as a class. Learn about what is means to be a Musical Theatre Actor
 Week 2
Lesson 2
Acting Through Song
Each student will bring an audition song that they have performed in the past and we learn how to apply Character Analysis to all of our materials
 Week 3
Lesson 3
Ballads, Patters, Character Songs and more
We will talk about the different styles and genres one should have in their audition books for Musical Theatre. Listen to examples and think about how we can apply this to our books.
 Week 4
Lesson 4
Golden Age/Neo-Classical Musical Theatre
Brief history lesson of Neo-Classical Musical Theatre. Listen to and list off Golden Age Musicals for students to choose from. Apply character work to 2 new audition songs
 Week 5
Lesson 5
Audition Lab
Students will take turns singing their audition songs chosen and will be given feedback on their performances
 Week 6
Lesson 6
Contemporary Musical Theatre
Brief history lesson of Contemporary Musical Theatre. Listen to and list Contemporary Musicals for students to choose from. Apply character work to 2 new audition songs

Audition Lab
Students will take turns singing their audition songs chosen and will be given feedback on their performances
 Week 8
Lesson 8
Pop/Rock Musical Theatre
Brief history lesson of Current Pop/Rock Musical Theatre. Listen to and list Pop/Rock Musicals for students to choose from. Apply character work to 2 new audition songs

Audition Lab
Students will take turns singing their audition songs chosen and will be given feedback on their performances
 Week 10
Lesson 10
Resume and Headshots
Learn about why we have Resume and Headshots and how to format them for Musical Theatre for Community Theatre, Professional Theatre and College Auditions

Fun Song
Everyone chooses a modern song that they think represents them the best and applies character analysis techniques.
 Week 12

SHOW CASE
Students will perform 2 contrasting Audition pieces for the class from the 7 songs they have prepared throughout the course!
  • In this 4 session course students will learn about singing anatomy, character analysis and how to perform Musical Theatre songs! We will first start off with singing anatomy and vocal warm-ups to understand how to sing fully on our voice.
With my BA in Theatre Performance from Huntington University and my 5 years of freelance teaching I have gained the skills to teach students these different art forms in multiple situations and adaptations.

Details: Students will be assessed by: OBSERVATION: -Are they memorized? -Did they make changes after being given notes? FEEDBACK: -Students will receive notes as a whole -Students will receive notes individually -If I have notes for a student that might be embarrassing I will send them privately (i.e. Sarah, you keep starting on the left every time....)
This class is designed for musical theatre students who want to improve their auditioning skills for musicals or college auditions.

Students need access to Youtube outside of class.
Students need to have the capability to video record (i.e phone, laptop, tablet, camera)
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Students might be singing songs from shows with mature themes.
Students should always bring water to maintain proper vocal care.
Price of class covers cost for sheet music to be provided.
