Class Experience
In this class, learners will get to explore their passion for musical theater in depth by focusing on a show a week and discussing what they love about it. We will explore the plot, creative decisions, and history behind the show. Learners will listen to the music and respond to it by posting weekly in the classroom and completing interactive Nearpod activities related to the history of the show and ways that learners interpret and critique it. I teach flex classes by posting the Nearpod with embedded video weekly on Monday. Learners will complete the Nearpod presentation, watch the video, and respond to each other and me in the classroom and on Nearpod throughout the week as they listen to that week's musical. My teaching style is relaxed and Socratic. I like to ask questions to get learners thinking and drawing their own conclusions! The more interactive students are, the more enjoyable their class experience will be. Week 1: We will start off with the brand new Andrew Lloyd Webber show Cinderella! It's a new take on an old story. We'll look at some of the themes and this fresh take on an old story! Week 2: We will continue with the classic, The Phantom of the Opera. This is a more traditional show and contains some well-known songs. Week 3: This week we will look at Matilda. We'll discuss the plot and characters and how the music fits them. Week 4: Newsies is our show for this week. We'll look at the history behind the story and what was going on during this time period in New York City. Week 5: Shrek: The Musical will be our next show. We'll look at this unique take on some of the more well-known fairy tales and the themes of the show. Week 6: Fiddler on the Roof is a classic! We'll learn about the history behind the story and discuss the plot and characters. Week 7: School of Rock is a fun show with some great themes! We'll discuss the music, plot, and character development of this show. Week 8: Little Shop of Horrors is a fun show with just the right amount of campiness, so we'll finish off our study with it! We'll look at character development and how the chorus is used in this show.
