Music Games for Young Beginners | Musical Notes, Rhythms, Terms, and Symbols
Class experience
US Grade 3 - 6
Beginner Level
In this ongoing class we will use games to help us learn and solidify our knowledge about the musical alphabet, musical symbols and the keys of the piano. No piano required! (Age ranges are flexible for this class, beginners welcome.) Class will be presented in a few different ways in order to reach all learners and their styles. I will use projected visuals, an overhead camera to show my hands and piano, and advanced audio for optimal sound. Some weeks will include PDF game boards and other...
Musicians will engage in musical fun by playing games to either start learning musical components or solidify their budding musical knowledge. This is a non-competitive class and an instrument is not required to participate. Some of the things we will be learning are: - Reading sheet music, primarily Treble and Bass Clefs - Musical notes like A B C D E F & G - Note & rest values like Quarter, Half, Whole, Eighth, and Sixteenth - Dynamics, Articulations, Styles, & Tempos - Musical symbols like Time Signatures, Key Signatures, Bar Lines, Repeats, Fermatas - Solfege Do Re Mi - Musical Composers and History - Piano Keys (no piano required to participate)
Please refer to my Teacher Profile for a full description of my experience. In short, I am a working musician based in NYC, I am the Music Director at Chelsea Piers Kids, I have been teaching music for 20+ years, and I have a Masters of Music Degree from the Manhattan School of Music. I teach on Outschool on Mondays.
PDF KEYS will be provided, otherwise plain paper and a pencil is recommended. Feel free to bring your instruments, I love it when musicians play the notes we find on the piano or tap a rhythm on the xylophone. (Instruments are not required for this class.)
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Optional Kahoot games are available for the musicians to play after class is over. Have fun! Early readers may need help reading the KEYS before class begins. The KEYS have all the answers needed in order to play the games. I recommend reading and going over them before class starts if your learner has never participated in a musical class or course. If your learner has taken music lessons before, they may want to test their previous knowledge and not read the KEYS before class. In order to engage all learners along their musical journey, some of the games may be easier than others until an informal assessment has been made regarding your musicians level. I can offer different levels of play for some of the games. This class is designed for beginners and students who may have started playing an instrument somewhat recently. Please feel free to let me know some musical topics that your learner may need additional help with. Sometimes I am able to alter or customize the topic schedule if I have several weeks notice.
I currently teach Music Yoga Art Preschool, Music Games for Beginners, and private piano lessons on Mondays on Outschool. I am based in NYC and am the Music Director at Chelsea Piers Kids where I create musical curriculum and personalized lessons...
