Description
Class Experience
This class is taught in English.
Learners will gain interest in music by playing a game. They will review many facts about the elements of music, its expressive qualities, and its purposes that fifth-graders should know before passing into sixth grade. These are facts including vocabulary and principles that make it possible for fifth-graders to evaluate music according to the National Core Standards for Music. Advanced learners will practice quick recall. Less advanced learners will learn through participation. Critical thinking skills are engaged by reverse-engineering a question to fit an answer and through evaluation, analysis, synthesis, and creating.
I am a lifelong Jeopardy watcher. I love to say the question before the contestant! I am also a certified music teacher for students in grades P-12. I have experience in teaching all grades in a public school setting, and now in the online classroom, too. Let me know if you would like to have this class adapted to another age group, and I will do that. I think this will be fun, informative, and just a great experience for learners.
There is no homework for this class. Pre-class review is encouraged, but not required. Post-class review is also encouraged. Parents may access the free resource and print it before the class when it is posted on our Outschool classroom page. The resource will include citations for the source material.
Information will be provided to help learners who wish to prepare. This will be posted on our Outschool classroom page.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
The class will discuss a KWL chart at the end of class. This helps students to self-assess. The sections are labeled, K (What I Know), W (What I Want to Know), and L (What I Learned). To follow up, the teacher will send a personal example of how to use what students learned to assess a piece of music. The music selected will be something that is popular at the time of the class and school-appropriate, with clean language and content.
25 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
There will be no sensitive or violent content in this class.
