Music Yoga Art Preschool: Let's Celebrate Diwali is a class where introductions to music, yoga and art are centered around India's The Festival of Lights. The class begins with a welcome song where we sing everyone's names and warm-up our voices. Then we take a few moments to learn the daily affirmation, chit-chat about ways we can incorporate it in our lives, and engage in a breathing exercise before we warm-up our bodies with a 6-pose Diwali yoga sequence. After yoga, we dance our wiggles out to a high-energy Bollywood song followed by a story where we learn about the 5 days of Diwali. We will use a traditional song to create the sounds of the tabla, which is a drum. We end class by creating a rangoli design and sing the goodbye song. The class is designed to be age-appropriately silly, musically engaging, with a practice of mindfulness where we learn techniques to help us manage our emotions and the world around us. This class will discuss the celebrational aspects of Diwali only, religious elements will not be mentioned. I always plan for more than is needed, and some songs may be cut in the interest of time and in the preference of learners. When learners like to share and chat, I try and accommodate. Recordings are not available for this class. As a teacher my style is very energetic, enthusiastic and inclusive. I love to interact and ask for suggestions and ideas for songs or games on the spot. I use projected visuals on screen to show yoga poses and song games, and I utilize the annotation features to highlight specifics. I will be playing ukulele and the piano, which is hooked up to my desktop for optimal sound quality. Please refer to my teacher profile for my credentials and experience.
Learning Goals
Yogis will be exposed to basic musical concepts, introductions to yoga, encouraged to move freely and expressively, and inspired to imagine the possibilities, perfectly suited for the young crowd. Some basic musical concepts taught in class are big and little beats, musical contrasts and forms, and ear training. Introductions to yoga include breath work, mindfulness and pose technique. The art section is designed to get the creative juices flowing rather than perfecting techniques. Each yogi will be encouraged to share interests and ideas to facilitate inclusivity, community and imagination. (Grown-ups can be off-screen and nearby to help with any technical difficulties and yoga poses.)
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Regarding the physical practice of yoga, all yogis are encouraged to move slowly and mindfully, and have enough flat space around them to remain safe in their surroundings. Water-bottles are recommended. Parental supervision may be needed if yogis are unaccustomed to a physical practice. All yogis practice yoga at their own risk.
Grown-ups will need to be familiar with the functions of audio and visual on Zoom and be nearby to Mute/Unmute if needed, check in with the learner from time to time for safety, provide some safe space to dance and do yoga poses, and read through the Grown-Up Guide to be aware of what’s going to happen. It is encouraged to familiarize your yogis with the mute/unmute Zoom functions.
Enabling Original Sound in Zoom Audio Settings will help me tremendously with being able to hear your musician. It is highly recommended that you Enable Original Sound when doing music classes and attempt for a quiet location. The Mute Function will be utilized for an optimal audio experience.
