Have you ever thought about composing a song? Learn the basic skills needed to create a simple 8 measure melody by combining the musical elements of pitch, rhythm, meter, and tempo. During this class, your child will be given directions for writing a melody containing 8 measures in the key of C major that can be completed during class. Students will be sent handouts before the lesson, making this an easy and fun task to learn. Some previous musical knowledge would be helpful, but is certainly not required. This class can be taken more than once for added musical composition opportunities. Students can practice creating new melodies each time, building on the musical knowledge they have learned. If the student has access to a piano, they can use it to help them during this exciting experience. This is an ideal class for any student with interest learning the basic skills needed to create their own musical melody! They may find that they have a hidden talent and have the opportunity to work toward becoming the next great composer!
Learning Goals
Students will be able to name the notes used in the C major scale, and will create a simple musical 8 measure melody that can be played on the piano or another musical instrument. They will be able to define the musical elements of pitch, rhythm, meter, and tempo.

My concentration of instruments in college were voice and piano. I am also certified in the areas of Reading and English As A Second Language. I am a retired teacher with many years of experience teaching children from the ages of 5 years old through high school. I also have a mastery of the clarinet, guitar, and recorder. I have four grandchildren and I love spending time with them, doing crafts, playing games, and helping them to grow and mature. Aside from spending time with family, I have a lot of hobbies that I enjoy, such as fishing, reading, sewing, and crafting.
I believe that it is important for every child to feel confident in their accomplishments! With that in mind, I gear my classes toward an environment of encouragement and positive reinforcement. Through teaching, question and answer, conversation, games, and interactive activities, I give students opportunities to shine while learning new skills.
