1 hour per week. Homework is assigned in the form of practice. At this level, approximately ten minutes per day in between classes is appropriate.Class Experience
Beginning singers will spend eight weeks exploring their voices in a safe and supportive group setting. Child-friendly and developmentally appropriate vocal exercises, physical and vocal warms ups, beginning full body solfege (a way of connecting body, neutral syllables, and gestures to aid in sight-reading), breathing exercises, singing pure vowels, matching rhythm and pitch, and simple, age-appropriate songs specifically designed for teaching musical concepts will be introduced in this course. Beginning theory concepts will also be taught. Classes will be structured to begin with physical and vocal warm-ups and singing games. New concepts will be introduced through songs and interspersed with stories, games, and vocal exercises. Children will be given a chance to both look at music and learn through call and response. There will also be chances to use props and to engage in some composition. All singers will also be given chances to perform alone, although this is always optional. This class will be extremely interactive. All students are expected to participate, even if they choose not to sing solo for the group. No materials are necessary other than a voice and desire to sing. I believe that teaching voice involves a great deal of trust between students, group of learners, and the teacher, and strive to create an environment where singers feel safe and comfortable sharing their voices. My goal is not necessarily to create singers, but children who feel comfortable putting their voices out into the world. No prior experience or knowledge is needed for this class. Children who have already taken this class are welcome to join us again, as every session of this class is tailored to the interests and ideas of the unique class enrolled.
