In this 8-week class, students will expand their knowledge of music theory through games, listening activities, discussion, and writing their own music to work on harmonic analysis and learn about rules of part-writing and modulations.

 Week 1
Lesson 1
Review
In this lesson, we will review cadences and the rules of part-writing while spending some time on melodic, interval, and rhythmic dictation practice.
 Week 2
Lesson 2
Major Harmonic Sequence: Introduction, iii, and vi
In this lesson, we'll start learning about the harmonic sequence and study how to interact with the iii and vi chords in context. Extra time will be spent working on melodic, interval, and rhythmic practice and chordal analysis.
 Week 3
Lesson 3
Major Harmonic Sequence: IV and ii
In this lesson, we'll start learning about the harmonic sequence and study how to interact with the IV and ii chords in context. Extra time will be spent working on melodic, interval, and rhythmic practice and chordal analysis.
 Week 4
Lesson 4
Major Harmonic Sequence: vii0 and V/V7
In this lesson, we'll review the harmonic sequence and study how to interact with the diminished vii, V, and V7 chords in context. Extra time will be spent working on melodic, interval, and rhythmic practice and chordal analysis.
 Week 5
Lesson 5
Introduction to Secondary Dominants
In this lesson, we'll begin looking at secondary dominant chords and how to work with them. Extra time will be spent working on melodic, interval, and rhythmic practice and chordal analysis.
 Week 6
Lesson 6
Review of Secondary Dominants and Introduction to Pivot Chords
In this lesson, we'll look at more secondary dominant chords and start studying pivot chord modulation. Extra time will be spent working on melodic, interval, and rhythmic practice and chordal analysis.
 Week 7
Lesson 7
Review of Sec. Dominants, Pivot Chord, and Intro to Relative Key Modulations
In this lesson, we'll look at more secondary dominant chords and pivot chords and start studying relative key modulation. Extra time will be spent working on melodic, interval, and rhythmic practice and chordal analysis.
 Week 8
Lesson 8
Review
In this lesson, I'll take requests from students on what they'd like to review and we'll spend time on writing a song together using some of the techniques we've learned in this class.
I have bachelor's degrees in music education and performance.
I have a master's degree in performance with a minor in music education.
I have a doctorate in music performance with additional work in music education. I've taught music to preschool through college level and have taught several music theory courses through upper undergraduate level.

Optional homework will be offered as needed to support better understanding of concepts.

Students should have taken my Music Theory 1-3 courses or a high school-level music theory class to jump in at this level. If you have any questions, just message me and we can discuss which level class would be best.
