Students will further develop their knowledge from the previous music theory courses. In this course, students will continue to advance their work in ear training and musical composition. We will also do melodic and rhythmic dictation in this course. There will be additional exercises and interactive class discussions through video messaging and classroom posting about music recordings, analysis, and composition assignments. For each of the composition assignments, students will be expected to listen and provide positive feedback to each other's listening assignments. Students will be engaged through open discussion of their listening journals that they will post in the classroom and along with class discussion topics that will be provided by the teacher. There will be some work with melodic and rhythmic dictation that students can upload in the class. *This course is recommended for those who have a strong background in music theory. 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞 𝐒𝐲𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐮𝐬 𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝟏: 𝐎𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐬 Learners will be introduced to multiple scales including chromatic scales, whole-tone scales, blues scales, octatonic scales, and the pentatonic scale. 𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝟐: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐬 Learners will learn about the seven different modes and their history including Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, and Locrian modes. Learners will do an analysis project that will incorporate the topics learned from the first and second meetings. 𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝟑: 𝐋𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐲𝐩𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐲 Learners will develop the skills to analyze music from the late Renaissance. The topics discussed will be suspensions, rhythm and meter, plagal cadence, parallel motion, and form. There will be an analysis project that will include listening exercises provided by the instructor. 𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝟒: 𝐓𝐰𝐨-𝐕𝐨𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐄𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐡-𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐩𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭 Learners will be introduced to two-voice eighteenth-century counterpoint where they will learn about the structure of counterpoint, polyphony, the two-part invention, motive, and counter-motive during this epoch. There will be an assignment from the textbook provided by the instructor. 𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝟓: 𝐓𝐰𝐨-𝐕𝐨𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐄𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐡-𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐩𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭 Learners will learn more about the following elements of counterpoint that include sequences, sectional form, harmonic rhythm, and hidden octaves in counterpoint. There will be a composition project that the instructor will provide to the learners where they will also be expected to analyze their own composition and present it to their peers. 𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝟔: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐮𝐠𝐮𝐞 Learners will be introduced to the history of the fugue and its origins. The following topics that will be discussed include Subject, Exposition, Answer, Real Answer, Tonal Answer, Modulating subject, Countersubject, and Invertible counterpoint. There will be an analysis assignment provided by the instructor. 𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧 7: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐮𝐠𝐮𝐞 Learners will continue to develop their knowledge about the fugue and they will learn about the following topics during this session: Inversion at the octave, Link, Bridge, Episode, Entry, Stretto, Augmentation, Diminution, Retrograde, Melodic inversion, and Coda. There will be an assignment provided by the instructor that will involve identifying all of these elements in music. 𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝟖: 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐮𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐲 Learners will learn more about the application of these musical techniques through listening. There will be multiple composers discussed in the lesson. Learners will create listening journals accounting for what they listened to in class. 𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝟗: 𝐂𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐲 Learners will be introduced to chromatic harmony. The following topics will be covered in class: Borrowed Chords in major and minor keys, Picardy third, Modal mixture, and Chord Progressions. Ear Training: Melodic and Rhythmic dictation (whole notes, half notes, quarter notes) 𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝟏𝟎: 𝐍𝐞𝐚𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐧 𝟔𝐭𝐡 𝐂𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐬 Learners will be introduced to Neapolitan 6th Chords and History. Another topic discussed will be Doubling and Voice Leading. Ear Training: Melodic and Rhythmic dictation (half notes, quarter notes) 𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝟏𝟏: 𝐀𝐮𝐠𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝟔𝐭𝐡 𝐂𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐬 Learners will continue to develop their knowledge about the following augmented sixth chords: the Italian 6th Chord, the French 6th Chord, and the German 6th Chord.
