I have prepared a syllabus for this class that gives clear instructions and hands on materials to help students learn the circle of fifths. Classes will take place for 45 minutes once a week for three weeks. It is important that student's have a basic understanding of note reading before taking this class. I do offer a class called All About Notes that will prepare them to move on with the theory we will be tackling in this class if your student isn't confident in their note reading ability yet. The topics we will be covering each week are as follows: Week 1: We will learn how to make the major keys side of the circle of fifths and the key signatures for each major key. This includes learning the order of the sharps and flats in each key signature and simple ways to remember that, as well as the correct placement of the sharps and flats in each key signature. Week 2: We will add on the minor keys, their relationship to the major keys, two different ways to relate the minor and major keys as well as their key signatures. We will also spend some time reviewing from week 1. After this lesson students will be able to make the complete circle of fifths. Week 3: We will talk about, and demonstrate, how the circle of fifths can be applied to many theory applications including transposition, chording, intervals and music composition. This will be a quick go over. Students who have a general understanding of music will not need further instruction, but those to whom this is new may find a need for further lessons. For more in depth teaching on this you are welcome to continue with some one on one lessons or sign on for one of my other classes. I am also willing to answer questions post class if students would like to send them to me. Practicing in between lessons will help to solidify the lesson and prepare students for the next week's lesson. I am always available for discussion between classes and look forward to making this a practical, life changing class in how you understand and relate to music and theory! I hope it will push you beyond where you are at and into new musical territory.
