In this 13-week music theory for the advanced level, learners will develop their knowledge about modes, polyphony, counterpoint, fugue, chromatic harmony, Neapolitan & augmented sixth chords, transposition, and detecting errors in music.

Learners will be introduced to multiple scales including chromatic scales, whole-tone scales, blues scales, octatonic scales, and the pentatonic scale.

Lesson 2:
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐬
Learners will learn about the seven different modes and their history including Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, and Locrian modes. Learners will do an analysis project that will incorporate the topics learned from the first and second meetings.

Lesson 3:
𝐋𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐲𝐩𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐲
Learners will develop the skills to analyze music from the late Renaissance. The topics discussed will be suspensions, rhythm and meter, plagal cadence, parallel motion, and form. There will be an analysis project that will include listening exercises provided by the instructor.

Lesson 4:
𝐓𝐰𝐨-𝐕𝐨𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐄𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐡-𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐩𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭
Learners will be introduced to two-voice eighteenth-century counterpoint where they will learn about the structure of counterpoint, polyphony, the two-part invention, motive, and counter-motive during this epoch. There will be an assignment from the textbook provided by the instructor.

Currently serves at the Banting Postdoctoral Fellow (2024-2026) at Concordia University, Montréal, she is also recipient of the Fulbright and Portuguese Science & Technology awards. She is an internationally known linguist, teacher, and professional musician who has taught on four continents. Her passion for service stemmed from her work as an AmeriCorps Vista Fellow. In her spare time, she likes to play with her pet rabbit, Señor Blanco.

🎼𝐀𝐛𝐝𝐨 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐣𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐞-𝐙𝐨𝐦𝐞ñ𝐨🎶 is an accomplished Arab-American clarinetist, woodwind doubler, composer, conductor, and educator. He is currently earning double bachelor's degrees in Clarinet Performance and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Illinois-Chicago. With an active schedule, Abdo regularly performs with the Lakeside Pride Symphonic Band and the Middle East Music Ensemble of the University of Chicago. He has also performed with The Naperville Winds, Northshore Concert Band, and Chicago Philharmonic. As a soloist and chamber musician, he’s had the opportunity to collaborate with clarinetists from across the United States, South America, Europe, and the Middle East.
