Music theory is the study of the practices and possibilities of music. When you can read and write music, the possibilities are endless! The basics of music theory include being able to identify and draw the different musical symbols that we need to compose and read music. Writing skills make it possible for musicians to communicate to other musicians HOW they would like their music played. In this course, students will learn the techniques needed to draw: The Staff, The Grand Staff, Bar Lines, Double Bar Lines, and Repeat Signs The Treble, Bass, and Alto Clef Whole Notes, Half Notes, Quarter Notes, Eighth Notes, and Sixteenth Notes Whole Rests, Half Rests, Quarter Rests, Eighth Rests, and Sixteenth Rests Benefits of learning music theory: Learning music theory is like learning to WRITE a language. Yes, we begin to learn a language by speaking it first, but once we have mastered some basic sounds and symbols, we can learn to READ. When we can READ, we are better able to understand the structure and meaning behind each piece of music we listen to. And when we are able to understand more music, we can use what we have learned to help us create our own compositions!
Learning Goals
At the end of the 4 week course, the students will have a deep understanding of how to properly draw musical symbols by hand.
