Piano Class Curriculum: Rhythm for Beginners (12 Weeks)

Week 1: Rhythm Kickoff!

Week 2: Time Signature Groove
Explore 4/4 and 3/4 time signatures.

Lesson 1:
Rhythm Kickoff!
 This lesson is about introducing students to the foundational concepts of rhythm in music. We’ll focus on understanding different note values—whole, half, quarter, and eighth notes—and how they contribute to creating a steady beat. Through interactive clapping exercises and rhythm games, students will begin to develop their timing and coordination, setting the stage for more advanced rhythmic skills in future lessons.

Lesson 2:
Time Signature Groove!
 This lesson is about exploring time signatures, specifically 4/4 and 3/4, and understanding how they shape the rhythm of a piece of music. Students will learn how to count and play rhythms within these time signatures, using clapping exercises and simple piano patterns to reinforce the concepts. This lesson helps students grasp how beats are organized in music, further developing their rhythmic foundation.

Lesson 3:
Rest and Play!
 This lesson is about understanding the role of rests in music and how they create pauses and spaces within rhythmic patterns. In Week 3, students will be introduced to different types of rests and learn how to incorporate them into rhythms. Through guided online exercises, they’ll practice creating and playing rhythm patterns that combine both notes and rests, helping them to appreciate the balance between sound and silence in music.

Lesson 4:
Hands in Harmony!
 This lesson is about developing hand coordination while maintaining a steady rhythm. In Week 4, students will focus on playing simple two-hand piano patterns, gradually learning to synchronize both hands in their playing. Through online practice sessions, they’ll improve their ability to keep a consistent rhythm while using both hands, building a strong foundation for more complex pieces in the future.
