Class Experience

In these weekly private one on one ukulele lessons, beginning ukulele students will begin to learn how to play their ukulele.

The students will be using the Hal Leonard Ukulele for Kids book, which should be purchased by the students before class begins.
No prior knowledge is required. Students should have a soprano (small), concert (medium) or baritone (large) 4-string ukulele to use for all classes.

In this class, students will learn the parts of the ukulele, how to hold their ukulele with the correct hand position, picking, strumming and chords.

After learning the basics of how to hold and tune their ukulele, students will learn to strum 7 different chords. Next students will learn to pick 9 different notes, so they can play melodies on their ukulele in addition to strumming chords.

Some of the songs students will learn to strum include "Yellow Submarine", "The Hokey Pokey", "Mr. Tambourine Man" and "Surfer Girl". Some of the songs students will learn to pick include "Island Stream", "Etude", "Amazing Grace", "Birthday Song" and "Love Me Tender".

We will progress through the books at your child's pace. Students will be assigned a few pages to practice between lessons.

Due to the nature of private instrument lessons, I require a student's camera to be on at all times. It should be pointed at the student's fingers on their instrument so I can best help with proper technique. I will send a picture of the ideal camera position before lessons start.

Since practice is an important part of learning an instrument, students should practice 15-20 minutes per day for 4-5 days per week, for a minimum of 60 minutes of practice per week. Practice logs will be provided for students to write down the pages to practice and the number of minutes they practice per week.

If a student is more than 10 minutes late, it will be considered a missed class, per Outschool policy and the class is not eligible for a refund. If the student needs to cancel class, I will reschedule if possible or issue a refund, as long as I am notified more than 24 hours in advance. In general, students are allowed to cancel/reschedule 1 lesson every 8 weeks (with 24 hours notice). Exceptions may be made in emergency situations.
If I as a teacher have a scheduling conflict, I will either contact you to reschedule for a different time or issue a refund.

I have Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Music and 20 years of experience. I taught ukulele classes and private lessons in school settings for 10+ years. I am passionate about music and look forward to teaching your child to play their ukulele!
