Anne Martin is both a professional singer and music teacher who holds a Bachelor's degree in music. She has been singing for over 20 years, and teaching for over 10. In the last three years her husband and her have been professional entertainers in the state of Florida providing themed events including but not limited to concerts that showcase some of the best music of the 20th Century. In addition to singing for a professional choir, teach K-8th music in the public school, and appearing in community theater shows, she also has worked with 20 retirement communities to provide decade themed entertainment for residents.

I’ve always had an eclectic taste in good music, and often will listen to multiple styles. That is why I was so excited years ago when I took my first college level course that specifically studied the music of the 20th Century. This century was like no other for the music world as the world broke loose from traditional norms, followed by the invention of the radio, television, and internet. The “popular” music of each decade often borrowed some music themes of the past while adding something new. During this time in history we also had the rise of pop stars, with each generation growing farther apart in their musical tastes. As someone who’s worked as an entertainer for senior homes, 55 plus communities, and modern restaurants I can attest to the vast musical tastes people often have based upon the time period they were teens and what pop music was like for their generation.
There will be an assignment each week. After a short lecture and informative PowerPoint, students will be given links to music selections to watch. After watching the videos they will need to fill out the questionnaire response to these assignments on the classroom page. They are welcome to dialogue with other students regarding the classroom assignment prompts and encouraged to use critical thinking skills as they compare and contrast pieces. They also will be able to interreact with each other sharing what they did and didn't like about the music from that particular decade.
Learners will need access to Youtube in order to listen to examples of musicians and singers from each decade.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
No live meetings, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Some history of the 20th Century will be touched on such as, World War 1, World War 2, and the Vietnam War in regards to how each of the events influenced music. All music clips and scenes sent for children to watch will be G rated.
