Class Experience

Students will be able to identify, discuss, and evaluate the evolution of western pop music throughout the 20th century.
As a music educator and professional vocalist, I have not only studied the music of the 20th century, but also performed a variety of music from the last 100 years. My husband and I have worked as entertainers for several senior homes and retirement communities where we provide themed concerts that celebrate the decades of the last century. Due to this, we’ve heard firsthand accounts with seniors as they reminisce about their parents singing songs from the early turn of the century, how they met their sweetheart on the dance floor at a Big Band concert, and how they preferred their Jazz music into the 1960’s at the time when their children were beginning to listen to Rock & Roll, Folk Music and etc…These stories share a glimpse of the massive musical shift that the last 100 years have brought us.
Students will be encourage to research more music from each decade we study each week and be willing to discuss it with the teacher and classmates at the next class's opening review.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Class #12 each student will be asked to present an essay that they have written detailing what they have found the most interesting in the course. They will also be asked to name their favorite musical decade and or style and give some details for why it was their choice. They will share this with the teacher and other classmates.
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
In this course WW1, WW2, and Vietnam will be mentioned in regards to how music reflected this period of time of our national history.
We will refer to several musical artists of the last century. There will be youtube videos that accompany the lesson that will be uploaded in the classroom each week.
