Description
Class Experience
Students will learn or improve their knowledge of poetry and will be able to read, comprehend, analyze, evaluate, and ultimately produce poems by using music as their instrument or guide to understanding poetry better. The teacher will model lessons on how to break down lyrics poetically, while students will be able to provide their own favorite songs to critique and analyze with the other students. Students will also be asked to write their own poems/lyrics during the course. Those students who are musically inclined may also create and share their own creation of music. The class will be broken into sections: the first 20-25 mins of the class will consist of the teacher teaching the poetic terminology and techniques, then 30-35 mins the class will consist of students listening and analyzing the musical lyrics, during the final session of the class, during the 25-35 mins, students will find the poetic elements and/or terminology mentioned during the first session of the class within the song/s. The students will also engage in discussions of the poems and songs presented during class time.
I am offering this class because poetry is one of my favorite things to teach, but over the years, due to state testing, it has been more and more difficult to include the fun and creative side of poetry that I used to love to teach. I believe that I am a good teacher for it, since I have a love and a passion for poetry and literature, and I can make it fun for students. I currently teach English at a performing arts school, and I love having the flexibility to work and collaborate with the Arts teachers at my school. I have learned how to integrate the arts with my English class and I love every minute of it.
Students will be asked to bring lyrics of their favorite songs to class.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
The learner will be assessed based on their engagement and interactions during the discussions, their creative work, and a final project at the end of the course. Their measurement will be based on if they have mastered the content or not: "M-Mastered Content," "NM-Not Mastered," and "EM-Exceedingly Mastered"
1 hour 50 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
While songs will need to be edited or the radio-version, the content may be mature for some students.
