All you need to enjoy this class is an interest in music, outer space...or both! In this one-time class, we will talk about the Star Songs Project, led by Harvard University and the Smithsonian. It's the story of how very clever scientists figured out we could take x-rays from outer space, turn them into numbers, and then turn them into music with the help of musicians! An interactive part of the course will be working together to compose our own melody based on numbers so we understand exactly how they did it! I will screen share at certain points to show photographs and the website detailing the project.
Learning Goals
Students will learn how scientists and musicians can work together and how music can be composed from nothing but a string of numbers. They will also gain knowledge of the Star Songs project specifically.

Hi there! After 17 years of teaching music, I am happy to be teaching here at Outschool! I love showing others the amazing ways our brains respond to music through our emotions, our memories, and our imaginations.
I have taught private lessons for many, many years and recently completed 6.5 years of teaching in higher education after earning my Master of Music degree in 2011. I've taught students ages 4 to 64, from the very beginner to the professional musician.
Something fun and personal about me: I'm the mother to the sweetest 3-year old boy and a lover of sewing my own clothes...whenever I have the time. :)
