Class Experience

*THERE WILL BE NO LIVE MEETINGS*

In this 5 week FLEX class, we will focus on fundamental musical elements as we listen to, play or sing along with the music. Students will learn about the elements through pre-recorded videos and activities provided by the teacher twice a week. In the videos and activities provided, students will have the opportunity to practice what they are being taught. The elements will build upon each other week to week, and we will have a total review of the elements at the end of week 5.

Twice a week, students will be sent content in the classroom, including videos and activities to follow. Students can complete the assignments and send them via the classroom or show completion of the activities through the sites used. Assignments may include worksheets, recorded assignments and more made by the teacher and featured via the classroom or Nearpod. Activities and assignments will vary weekly by the element being taught, and many music activities are practice based. Recorded assignments will include the students showing their understanding of an element through performance - this may include playing along to the steady beat, or performing a rhythm that they have created during rhythm week. Additional at-home practice activities will be provided as needed throughout the weeks. The teacher will offer guidance with the assignment posts, and instructions on ways to continue practice as needed. During week 5, students will send a recording in which they show the teacher and students their favorite element through performance (singing, dancing, playing an instrument, etc.). Students will always be welcome to send their own encouraging words or videos in response to other students' video assignments in the classroom!

**Parental consent is required by Outschool for this resource (Nearpod).**
***Please note that students DO NOT need to have a Nearpod account to participate in the Nearpod activities. The teacher will send out a code for lessons that include Nearpod, and this code is entered into the appropriate box on the main Nearpod webpage for students to access that particular lesson. Codes for Nearpod will be posted in the classroom, so be sure to look in the classroom for codes as they are provided! Students will be prompted to fill in their name and an optional nickname, as this just helps the teacher track student progress and take note of what is completed by individual students. Students are more than welcome to create an account if they would like, but this is not a requirement! This website is free.***

Week 1: Steady beat - The heartbeat of music.
Why is steady beat important in music, and how do we find it? Stomp, tap and clap the steady beat with me!

Week 2: Rhythm - The speaking of music.
What is rhythm? Let's find the rhythmic patterns in songs and create our own rhythms!

Week 3: Melody - Where rhythm meets musical sounds.
What's the difference between rhythm and melody? Let's explore some of our favorite songs and sing along to the most popular melodies!

Week 4: Tempo - Expression through music. Fast as a rabbit, or as slow as a turtle? Keep track of the steady beat as the music gets faster and slower. How does the change in speed make you feel as you listen?

Week 5: Dynamics - Expression through music. As loud as a lion, or as quiet as a mouse? How does the volume of the music change the way it makes you feel?
Final video assignment during week 5!

Students should have access to a rhythm instrument, such as rhythm sticks, a small drum or a shaker. Even wooden spoons or two unsharpened pencils in place of rhythm sticks will work!

*No prior music knowledge is needed to take this FLEX class.*

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi, I am teacher Amber, and I am so happy to meet you. I am a certified music teacher (K-12) and special educator. I taught music full time for six years as a brick and mortar teacher in a public elementary school, as well as a non-public school for student with special needs. After having my son, I began teaching ESL online and have taught English lessons for the past 2.5+ years. I hold my B.S. in Music Education K-12 and have my M.Ed in Special Education. Growing up, I knew I wanted to be a teacher and have worked with learners ages 1 through 21 in multiple facets since high school.

I have a passion for working with learners of all abilities and allowing them to be creative exactly as they are. I love teaching music concepts to students using fun and engaging activities. I believe children learn best when they are having fun and are in a positive environment. I am always looking for inventive ways to help my students enjoy and remember musical elements. I understand the importance of mulit-modal teaching, and strive to apply this in my lessons to reach all learners.

In my classes, your learner will be met with a kind, encouraging and patient teacher who is ready to teach AND learn! I welcome curiosity and I promise that if I don't know the answer, I will try to find it so I can keep learning too! I am looking forward to teaching lessons on Outschool, and I cannot wait to meet you.
