Class Experience
Do you love music? Want to spend time with fellow music addicts? Then this is the place for you! In this informal club, students will have the opportunity to interact with fellow music lovers and share the experience of listening to some of the greatest albums of all time. Each week a new album and background information about the artist will be posted in the classroom. We will then come together to discuss the album, share our highlights and lowlights, and talk about the album's impact...
I have been a NYC public school teacher for 7 years and have taught at both the middle school and high school levels. I have a BA in History from Pennsylvania State University and a MA in Social Studies Education from Teachers College, Columbia University, as well as a New York State professional teaching certification. Beyond my teaching credentials, I have an absolute passion for music. I've always seen music as not only an escape from the realities of daily life, but also as a time capsule that connects us to another time and place. I hope to share my passion and knowledge with students and build bonds through our share love of some of the greatest music ever made!
Students will be asked to come to the session having listened to at least 3-4 songs off that week's album, however listening to the whole album is preferred.
Each week students will be provided with a short slideshow that introduces them to the album, artist, and provides some context. Students will also receive a link to the album and a curated list of tracks to listen to. I will make every attempt to provide Youtube links to the assigned albums. However, students may also benefit from signing up for a free Spotify account to have easier access to the songs and save their favorites.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
Whenever possible I will provide links to the clean versions of albums that contain explicit lyrics. Some songs may contain references to violence, drugs, sex, or other controversial topics. When these do arise, they will be treated sensitively and we will discuss why the artist chose these themes in the context of when and why the song was written.
