Upon completion, the following class would be Music Theory: Basic Fundamentals (Beginner - Self-Paced). No required experience or knowledge. Each lesson is a combination of lecture, listening, and discussion about the material covered in the lesson. The assignments are designed to help reinforce the topics learned in each lesson. While it is recommended to purchase the textbook, the teacher will provide all the materials needed for the learners in this class. This course will use video examples, and assignment explanations, and will provide feedback. Each lesson is a combination of lectures via PowerPoint, listening, and written discussion about the material covered in the lesson. The teacher will post questions in the classroom to encourage class discussion that will reflect the material that they have learned. Students will interact with one another by playing games like Quizlet! and play Kahoot!.
Learning Goals
Students will gain an understanding of the musical traditions from Africa, Asia, and the Americas, learning about the cultural contexts and influences behind each region’s unique sound.
Through weekly listening assignments, students will develop the ability to analyze and identify key elements of music from different cultures, such as rhythm, melody, instrumentation, and form.

over 4 WeeksLesson 1:
Bulgaria (Europe)
Students will explore the rich traditions of Bulgarian world music, focusing on key cultural practices like Koleda (Christmas carols), Kukerovden (masked ritual songs), Easter dance songs, and harvest songs. Students will also examine how these folk music traditions reflect Bulgaria’s deep connection to seasonal and religious celebrations, offering insight into the country's musical heritage and its role in shaping European world music.
Lesson 2:
Africa
Students will explore African music, focusing on key traditions such as Agbekor, the music and dance of the Ewe people, and the role of the Lunsi drummers in Ghana. Students will also examine specific pieces like Nag Biegu, Nhemamusasa, Nyarai, and Makala, highlighting the cultural significance of each.
Lesson 3:
America
Students will explore American music, focusing on iconic pieces like God Bless America and Yankee Doodle, along with the New Women’s Shuffle Dance and Tito Puente's Oye Como Va. The study will highlight how American music reflects multicultural influences, blending various traditions to create unique genres and styles.
Lesson 4:
East Asia (China); Final Project
Students will explore Chinese music, including traditional ensemble music, solo instrumental traditions, religious music, and modern popular genres. Students will examine how Chinese music reflects its cultural history and societal values, focusing on the distinct instruments and performance styles that define these genres. For the final project, students will receive all necessary information in one of the provided prompts to create a comprehensive report.

Currently serves at the Banting Postdoctoral Fellow (2024-2026) at Concordia University, Montréal, she is also recipient of the Fulbright and Portuguese Science & Technology awards. She is an internationally known linguist, teacher, and professional musician who has taught on four continents. Her passion for service stemmed from her work as an AmeriCorps Vista Fellow. In her spare time, she likes to play with her pet rabbit, Señor Blanco.
