During this 10-week course learners will study a variety of topics including rhythm, meter, form, dynamics, tempo and musical road signs.
Class experience
Music Appreciation - Elements of Music will emphasize rhythm while incorporating the topics of meter, form, dynamics, tempo and musical road signs. Each class will begin with homework check and share. Then learners will practice and perform rhythms using a plastic, disposable cup as an instrument. The learner will: *identify and perform music in different meters. *read and write rhythms. *identify and demonstrate dynamics, tempo and form in music. National Music Standards *MU:Cr2.1.5b Use standard and/or iconic notation to document personal rhythmic ideas. *MU:Pr4.2.5a Demonstrate understanding of the structure and the elements of music (such as rhythm and form) in music selected for performance. *MU:Pr4.2.5b When analyzing selected music, read and perform using standard notation. *MU:Re9.1.5a Evaluate musical works and performances, applying established criteria, citing evidence from the elements of music.
This class is a culmination of lessons that have been created over 28 years of teaching experience. Most materials are created by the teacher. This class would be equivalent to a semester of elementary general music and is aligned with national music standards. Homework Offered
Homework assignments will be given at the end of each class. The pacing of this course may be adjusted as needed. Homework may include rhythm practice, short reading assignments with questions, online quizzes and a music composition project.0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Learners will be formally assessed through class participation and weekly assignments. Upon request, the teacher will keep track of assignment grades and provide grade reports.Grades Offered
Each week learners need writing/coloring supplies, weekly handouts that will be posted to the classroom, scissors (some weeks) and a disposable plastic cup. Optionally: the learner may choose to organize materials in a folder or small binder.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Learners will need to use scissors to cut apart manipulatives on several weeks. They may prepare the materials ahead of time and might need assistance with using scissors.
