Class Experience

In this course, students will learn techniques to better appreciate music by studying concepts in music history, theory, and production. They will then use these skills in active listening sessions followed by moderated group discussion.

The class is structured in two sections- a lecture and an active listening section. In the first section, I will be teaching the students various topics in music history, theory, and songwriting using a powerpoint presentation. In the second section, I will select a musical work which the class will listen to together. Students will then discuss things that they liked and disliked about the music played, and mention things that they noticed using the information discussed in the class.

As a student, I noticed that the most engaging courses were ones in which I was given many opportunities to interact and many different approaches to learning. As a teacher, I know that students learn best when they are given every opportunity to succeed. Not every student learns in the same way, and this should be celebrated, not ignored.

Students do not need any prior experience or knowledge, though a basic understanding of different instruments and a love for music will be helpful.

Hello all! My name is Jonathan Kretchmer, and I'm excited to see you have taken interest in my courses. I offer classes in many different aspects of music, including music history, theory, and songwriting.
I hold a degree from the University of Redlands in Music Composition. Throughout my time at the University, I tutored my fellow students in all levels of Music Theory and Ear Training offered, and served as the teacher's assistant for the first-year theory course. As part of this position, I taught my own course called Theory Lab, in which struggling students would meet once a week to further discuss concepts studied in class. I also have several years of experience working with learners aged 5-15, teaching courses in music theory, piano performance, and composition.
The biggest thing I have realized as a student and a teacher is that learning is not straightforward. There are many types of learning, and there is no one approach that is perfectly suited for everyone. As a teacher, my aim is to offer as many different kinds of learning opportunities as possible so that all students can remain engaged. Whether that be group discussions, listening to music, watching a video, or simply teaching students about new concepts, it is very important to me that a student is given as many opportunities to succeed as possible.
