Class Experience

As a certified (K-12) music teacher, I have been trained to teach music as an art form, so that people with all kinds of life experiences and beliefs can participate in making music objectively, in a safe space. I absolutely respect learner diversity, and welcome feedback on specific sensitive topics (i.e. family or cultural beliefs that make certain music sensitive). Conversations about sensitivity will be treated with the highest discretion.

Certifications and Experience:
Bachelor of Music Education
Master of Music in Music Education
Currently certified as a K-12 music teacher, with ESL endorsement (exp 2024)
18 years experience teaching music in public elementary schools
12 years experience teaching private music lessons and community choirs
Currently a PhD student in Curriculum & Instruction
No homework necessary. Students can practice the songs between sessions if they would like to deepen their learning.
Music for most songs will be provided as file downloads. Sheet music could be printed or viewed on a separate device (like an iPad) to help learners who want to use it.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
1 hour 40 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
No mature content. As an art form, music often arises from sensitive historical or cultural contexts. Any historical/cultural music will be learned in a secular, informative way. Any potentially sensitive music (e.g., from holidays) will be posted for parents and students to see a week before it would be used in class. If any student or parent feels uncomfortable with the selection, that music will not be used. Any student or family sensitivities (i.e. no holidays) will be treated with discretion and absolute respect.

Hello! My name is Ms. Stephanie. When I was in college, a local family asked me to try teaching their daughter to play the piano. This was one of the best experiences of my life! Each week we gathered at the piano where she learned how to play...
