Class Experience

Music Academy: Singing Club is a great place for you to learn to sing songs and read music in a supportive community. In this class, you will have personalized instruction in vocal technique and learning your songs, and plenty of chances to practice. You'll also have chances to sing songs for the other kids and listen to their songs. We will actively practice being a positive creative learning community, supporting each other by listening and showing kindness. We'll be cheering for each other as we learn and share what we've learned!

In each class, we will:
- warm up our voices and breathing
- have a chance to sing songs for the others
- learn a song individually with personalized teacher support
- practice your song
- learn about a music concept

Music concepts will begin with these:
Week of 8/22: note names (pitches)
Week of 8/29: note lengths (durations)
Week of 9/5: the speed of the beat (tempo)
Week of 9/12: reading and hearing rhythms

Songs for this class may be chosen from a student's own music or from songs in my songbook. Students will need to purchase a digital/printed copy of any songs they want to learn that are not in my songbook. I also have some digital materials that I may offer as optional materials to enrich your learning journey. Links to access those materials will be shared in the classroom site. You will not need to create an account or log in to the music publisher's website to access those songs.

During the first 40 minutes of each class time, we will learn the lesson material. The last 10 minutes will be open for sharing. During the sharing time, students can share a song they've been working on, or a special interest (like another instrument they are learning, or another creative talent they are developing). Students can also answer ice-breaker-type questions, like "What is your favorite kind of music." This time is designed to help the students feel the friendship and encouragement of others who share their interests.

About me:
In 30 years of teaching music in private lessons and public elementary schools, the most incredible moments for me have occurred when students enjoyed learning the music and felt positive personal connections. This is what I hope to bring to the many young people learning from home or hoping for more meaningful music experiences. I am positive, upbeat, and relaxed, and invite students to join in as they feel comfortable. If you are looking for a connective, nurturing, musical environment for your child or children, I hope you'll join us!

I recommend that students and parents have open communication about the music that the student wants to work on in the class. Students may have the opportunity to utilize digital materials (songs, information) on a music publisher's website (Essential Elements Music Class). Links to access the songs will be shared in the classroom site. Students will not need to create an account or log in to the music publisher's website to access those songs. Use of digital materials on the website implies parental consent.
