Class Experience
Music Academy: Private Piano Lessons are a great place for you to learn to play the piano. Whether you are just beginning, wanting to improve, or working on intermediate repertoire, you will find support to reach your goals in this private class. I will craft a individualized approach based on the way that you learn and your goals to help you grow in your confidence, skills, musicianship and knowledge. We will use a combination of techniques to learn to play the piano. I will help you learn to read music, play by ear, and understand what you are playing all along the way. We will focus on finding meaningful experiences so that you enjoy your learning journey. I am a very supportive, encouraging teacher, and work to find ways for my students to enjoy their time and feel comfortable as they learn. Here are some topics we can discuss and practice in our lessons: - reading music on the grand staff - playing different dynamic levels (volumes) - playing melodies - playing chords (more than one note at a time) - playing what you hear - skill-builders like 5-finger patterns or scales - making your own music - understanding the patterns and features you hear in music We can use music and learning materials that you already have or I can suggest materials to purchase. I also have some digital materials that I may use to enrich your learning journey. Links to access those materials will be shared in the classroom site. You will not need to create an account or log in to the music publisher's website to access those songs. About me: In 30 years of teaching music in private lessons and public elementary schools, the most incredible moments for me have occurred when students enjoyed learning the music and felt positive personal connections. This is what I hope to bring to the many young people learning from home or hoping for more meaningful music experiences. I am positive, upbeat, and relaxed, and invite students to join in as they feel comfortable. If you are looking for a connective, nurturing, musical environment for your child or children, I hope you'll join us!

Parental Guidance
Music and learning materials used in our lessons will be co-selected by teacher and student. I will assume that any music or materials provided by the student have been approved by a parent. I recommend that students and parents have open communication about the music that the student wants to work on in the lesson.
Students may have the opportunity to utilize digital materials on a music publisher's website. Links to access the songs will be shared in the classroom site. Students will not need to create an account or log in to the music publisher's website to access those songs.
Supply List
As a student, you will need your own piano or keyboard. In addition, you will need to own a copy of the sheet music for any songs you want to learn. In most cases, a piano book in the student's level is the best option for having a variety of songs to learn. Many piano learning books are $10-15. We can use music and learning materials that you already have or I can suggest materials for you to purchase. I also have some digital materials that I may use to enrich your learning journey. Links to access those materials will be shared in the classroom site. You will not need to create an account or log in to the music publisher's website to access those songs.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
As a university-trained music teacher, I have learned to teach music as an art form, so that people with all kinds of life experiences and beliefs can participate in making music objectively, in a safe space. I absolutely respect learner diversity, and welcome feedback on specific sensitive topics (i.e. family or cultural beliefs that make certain music sensitive). Conversations about sensitivity will be treated with the highest discretion.
