Class Experience

This 2-day class is a sequel based on my first murder mystery class. However, students DO NOT need to take the first class BEFORE taking this one. These classes can be taken in any order. This class is meant to test students' inferencing skills to “read between the lines” as well as their attention to detail as they try and solve a murder mystery! Practicing good inferencing is an important step to becoming a better reader and deeper thinker. Inferencing helps us to figure out what is not being explicitly stated. Students will receive 32 clues to try and figure out the murder mystery by the end of the second class. I will reveal the clues a few at a time, and give students time to write down inferences and guesses about each group of clues they receive. We will discuss our guesses after each group of clues is given. As students receive new clues, they will have to adjust their thinking and their guesses.

Classes will be structured as follows:
Class 1
    - Introductions & Icebreaker
    - Give all of the clues, four at a time, and have students make inferences and guesses for each set of clues
    - Discuss guesses
    - Closing and goodbyes

Class 2
     - Attendance
     - Icebreaker: 2 Truths and a Lie
     - Have students discuss FINAL guesses: Who was murdered? How were they murdered? Why were they murdered?
     - THE BIG REVEAL
     - Who got the answer right? In how many clues did you get the right answer?
     - What clues were most important to the case? Where are the holes in the case?
     - How did you like class? (feedback)

Supplies needed for class:
      - Pen or pencil
      - Inference sheet (provided, printed before class)

Let's see who can solve the mystery first!

I taught this lesson many times to my students in school and they loved it! This class is geared toward teaching inferencing skills. Making inferences is a very important step toward full comprehension and deeper thinking about texts. This activity is a fun way to sharpen those skills!
