If your child loved children's books by Roald Dahl, this short stories class will be perfect! In this class, we meet twice for 45 minutes to read and discuss "Quitters, Inc." and "Night Shift." All students will be provided with a pdf as soon as you enroll Class Breakdown: Class 1: "Quitters Inc" 1. Welcome/Introduction 2. Introduction to author, title, story, and characters 3. Literary Elements, historical background 4. Ethical Dilemmas and pragmatics Class 2: "Night Shift" 1: Welcome 2. Share thoughts/discussions of the story and/or writings 3. Close reading of the story 4. Mutations (is the story plausible?) 5. Blooket or Gimkit review game of both stories
Learning Goals
Students will learn key skills such as critical reading/writing/thinking, inference, vocabulary, persuasive writing and speaking, comprehension, figurative language, symbolism, imagery, writing strategies, narration styles, paragraph writing, and so much more!
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Some stories may have mild profanity. The theme of the unit is murder, mysteries, and mayhem, so students will be reading stories that have to do with these topics, although it is not graphic or described in detail. All stories are appropriate for a high school classroom (ages 13 and up).
