Class Experience

We will read the book over a span of 4 days in a read aloud format during the class. We will discuss the events of the assigned reading in a respectful manner giving all students the chance to respond if they so wish to during class. We will have one craft per day which will be part of the pyramid presented on Thursday.

Day 1: Introductions, Chapters 1-3, make a mummy and treehouse craft.
Skills: setting, character analysis, prediction
Supplies needed: modeling clay or construction paper - your child can choose what to make their mummy out of. Ideas: toilet paper, streamer paper We don't want all the projects to be the same.

Day 2: Chapters 4-6, make a sphynx and begin the pyramid.
Literary Elements: setting, character analysis, prediction
Supplies needed: modeling clay, If your child wants to make a sandy bottom, he/she can collect sand. This craft is done in class, but the outcome of each craft should be somewhat different for each student.

Day 3: Chapters 7-9, make trees, water forms, and add details to their pyramid project.
Literary Elements: prediction, setting, character analysis
Supplies needed: construction paper in whatever color your child would like the trees to be, we will make rivers or lakes as well. This is the class we will be adding final details to their project and they will use their creativity. If your child wants a shiny blue material for water, that is fantastic as well.

Day 4: Chapter 10, presentation of pyramid project to the class, retell of story we read by each student
Literary Elements: character analysis, prediction, retelling a story, and pyramid presentation
Supplies needed: A completed pyramid to present to the class.

Supplies: In addition to all the supplies listed by the day, your child will need a small box with shallow sides or something similar to make the project. Your child may use any type of materials: googly eyes, glitter, specialty paper, fake grass, the sky is the limit. You will also need access to a printer to print pages that go along with the story.

Learning Goals

Students will improve their understanding of skills such as: setting, analyzing characters, plot, opinions, predictions, and retelling. Your child will also learn how to create a pyramid, and use oral language and presentation skills to present their own project to the class.
