Multiplying Polynomials with the FOIL Method – An Essential Algebra 1 Skill

This is a great refresher class for those who have completed Algebra 1 or for beginners who love a challenge and want to strengthen their skills in multiplying polynomials using the FOIL Method. This class will help reinforce essential algebra and integer operation skills and can be followed by my Factoring Polynomials Completely class for added reinforcement of essential algebra skills.

Class Experience

US Grade 7 - 10
Beginner Level
My teaching style is very interactive, engaging, encouraging, and fun. It begins with demonstrating the FOIL technique and continues with students and teacher working together to solve problems. Finally, the teacher will give students the opportunity to solve problems on their own, and then go over the problem as a group. Time permitting, students may submit problems of their own for the group to solve.
Learning Goals
This one-time class will introduce students to the FOIL method of multiplying polynomials, an essential Algebra 1 skill. This class will benefit students who have never learned the FOIL method as well as reinforce learning of current Algebra 1 students who have begun using it. It can also be a fun glimpse into Algebra 1 for younger students with a passion for advanced learning. For optimal ease and success in this class, the student should be familiar with integer operations and how to combine like terms, although I do often refresh these skills as we go.

Multiplying polynomials is an essential Algebra 1 skill that can be reinforced for current Algebra 1 students and fun for advanced 6th and 7th graders to learn for the first time. As someone who has tutored 6th, 7th, 8th grade math, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Pre-calculus, and Calculus, I have a wonderful, unique perspective because I know how valuable this skill is for not only Algebra 1, but beyond.
I am an industrial engineer who always wanted to be a math teacher. I had fun helping my kids with math homework while they were in school, and when they started college six years ago, I began tutoring math at our local middle school as well as tutoring privately (all grades). I love all math, especially algebra, and I make it fun for kids!
