Class Experience

1.) Students will learn how to solve multiplication word problems by creating visual models and algorithms to help them make sense of the problems. 2.) Students will be given a word problem and/or equation, they will create a model to solve the problem and share their different models with the class. 3.) Students will also be given problems and must try out one of their classmates models/strategies to solve the next similar problem. 4.) The first 35-45 min. students will use strategies to solve the problems posed by the teacher. 5.) The last 25- 15 minutes will be sent trying out classmates strategies.

Learning Goals

Students will improve their understanding of multiplication by using: grouping strategies, tally marks (for decomposing numbers), known facts to solve unknown facts, and decomposing "unfriendly numbers to create "friendly" numbers. Students will learn how to use algebraic properties for solving multiplication problems as opposed to just memorizing facts.
Students will work on 3-5 story problems per session. They will be given a multiplication word problem by the teacher (3-5 minutes), create a model of the solution( 5 - 10 min.), share their work with the teacher and receive teacher's feedback, then the teacher will share one of the students' strategies with the other classmates (10 min). Students will have the opportunity to analyze and learn from the work of their peers and add on or revise their work if necessary. Then a new problem will be posed for students to refine or practices a strategy again.

Supply List
Please use a fine tip marker if possible, it makes it easier for me to see your work. If you have several pennies or objects of the same size (32 minimum) to organize into arrays that would be great, but not necessary. Thank you!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi,

On the daily basis you can find me in elementary schools working side by side with teachers and students working to support students' understanding of mathematics. It's important that students know why math works the way it works, not just how to get an answer.

I was a classroom elementary school teacher for 13 years, an instructional coach for reading writing, and math, and now I am a consultant focusing on the connections between math and literacy.
I do my best to respond to all questions within 24 hours.
I believe in supporting students in becoming independent problem solvers. I believe in meeting students where they are, so that they can have a solid foundation with which to grow their mathematical thinking and success.

In my spare time I love gardening with my daughter, playing tennis, and reading!
