Class Experience

In this class, students will learn progressively harder multiplication problems. Students should know their single digit multiplication facts before taking this class. The class will use Nearpod for the interactive lesson. I believe that students should be engaged in learning which makes retaining information much easier.

The lessons will include lots of equations and real-world problems for students to work. Students will answer a variety of questions in many formats. Formats for questions will include written response, multiple choice, drag and drop, matching, and collaboration boards. Students will discuss question responses and methods used to answer questions during the class. There will also be a review section at the end of the Nearpod lessons with a game that students can complete on their own time after class. I will review the answers in the review section between classes to ensure all students are learning the content.

Lessons that are taught in the Multiplication Mania Summer Camp are:

Day One: Up to four digits multiplied by one digit. This will give students time to learn the multiplication strategy and the reasoning on why questions are solved this way. A lot of students when first learning multiplication memorize the facts and struggle when applying the multiplication fact knowledge to the multiplication strategies used to solve larger problems. This class will help bridge the gap between memorization and applying their knowledge to solve harder problems.

Day Two: Two digit by two digit multiplication. This class will expand their knowledge of the strategy learned in the first class. Students will start using the tens place when multiplying and this skill will be applied to all larger multiplication problems in the future.

Day Three: Up to four digit by three digit multiplication. Students will apply what they've learned in the two previous classes to this class. They will be multiplying into the thousands and hundreds places. Once they have this skill learned they can apply it to numbers even larger!

Day Four: This class will use problem types from all three previous lessons. Students will answer real-world problems, play a game, and see practical applications of when they will use multiplication. This class is all about applying what they've learned. The class will also have a few challenge questions to expand on the skills they've practiced and apply their strategy for solving the problems to even larger numbers!

Learning Goals

Students will be able to complete multiplication problems of any length after completing this class.

Parental Guidance
Students will use the Nearpod website during this class. They will receive a link when class starts to join the Nearpod lesson. Students do not need an account for Nearpod. They will use their first name only after clicking the link but their name will not be displayed when we discuss and view student work on screen. This website is appropriate for all learning ages and is just used as a method to deliver the lesson and see real time student work samples.
