Class experience
Many students struggle when it comes to mastering multiplication fact fluency. For some students, drilling with flashcards and hoping they eventually "stick" can be a frustrating and very time consuming process. In my experience, all students can become fluent in multiplication, but some require a more scaffolded approach. Multiplication is the foundation for so many other concepts, and without a solid understanding and mastery of these facts, it can really slow them down and cause...

Week 1Lesson 12 & 5x Using Doubles and Skip CountingIn this first lesson we will start with doubles addition to work on 2x facts, as well as skip counting by 5's for 5x facts. We will also go over the foundational multiplication concepts of repeated addition and groups. We will practice these facts with a game of multiplication BINGO.Lesson 2ReviewThis lesson will be additional practice and review of the last lesson.Week 2Lesson 3Skip Counting by 10's & 11xIn this lesson, we will start with a quick review of 2 and 5x multiplication facts. We will then move on to use the same skip counting strategy to practice 10x facts and then 11x, by adding one more group. We will review these facts with a game of Snakes & Ladders, where students will be asked a multiplication fact before each turn.Lesson 4ReviewThis lesson will be additional practice and review of the last lesson.Week 3Lesson 53 & 6x StrategiesIn this lesson, we will begin by review all of the facts we've learned so far with a quick fact retrieval exercise. We will then introduce 3x and 6x by using the known 2x and 5x facts and then to add one more group. This will take some practice, which we will do using our multiplication BINGO game.Lesson 6ReviewThis lesson will be additional practice and review of the last lesson.Week 4Lesson 74x Doubling StrategyIn this lesson, we will review all facts introduced so far and then work on a 4x doubling strategy using the 2x facts that we have already learned. We will practice this and other facts by playing a game of Connect Four where students will be asked a multiplication fact before each turn.Lesson 8ReviewThis lesson will be additional practice and review of the last lesson.Week 5Lesson 99x StrategiesIn this lesson, we will start with a multiplication memory game to review all learned multiplication facts, and then move to introduce 9x strategies.Lesson 10ReviewThis lesson will be additional practice and review of the last lesson.Week 6Lesson 117 & 8x Mnemonic Device StrategiesIn this lesson, I will introduce some fun and easy mnemonic devices that will help us memorize the trickier facts (7x7, 8x8, 7x8) and then we will review every strategy learned so far and practice our facts by playing the card game WAR, but with multiplication facts.Lesson 12ReviewThis lesson will be additional practice and review of the last lesson.
Students will become fluent in single digit multiplication facts.
This is an area that I had difficulty with as a child, and I really wish someone had used this approach with me. I have had much success with students who thought they would never master their multiplication facts. This approach is especially helpful for students who have a learning disability in math, or a language learning disability such as dyslexia which effects this area of math.
This class is suitable to all learners, but will specifically support learners who have a learning disability in math (dyscalculia), and have been unsuccessful in mastering multiplication fact fluency.
- deck of playing cards - dry erase board/marker or paper/pencil - loose parts like buttons, beads etc. for counting
