In this self-paced class, spellers will increase their skills, confidence, and abilities to spell words at the 2nd-4th grade level. Excellent for students with dyslexia or other spelling difficulties.

 Week 1
Lesson 1
Short Vowels
Learners will practice using multiple clues to help determine which vowel sound they hear in a word, as well as understanding strategies for spelling that will build the foundation of our course.
 Week 2
Lesson 2
How to Choose C or K Before a Vowel?
Learners will learn how to determine whether to use c or k to represent the /k/ sound when it appears before a vowel.
 Week 3
Lesson 3
Digraphs
Learners will practice the digraphs sh, ch, th, and wh.
 Week 4
Lesson 4
Blends
Learners will practice hearing individual sounds within blends to help write longer words.
 Week 5
Lesson 5
Open and Closed Syllables
Learners will be introduced to two types of syllables: open and closed. Learners will begin to distinguish when a vowel is able to make its long sound on its own and when it needs "help."
 Week 6
Lesson 6
K/CK, CH/TCH
Learners will be introduced to a spelling rule to help them distinguish between final /k/ and /ch/ spellings.
 Week 7
Lesson 7
FLOSS
Learners will discuss the FLOSS rule (explains the doubling found at the end of grass, stuff, fall).
 Week 8
Lesson 8
-IC endings
In this session, learners will find that when we have multi-syllable words ending in /k/, we often use a final c.
 Week 9
Lesson 9
Y as a Vowel
Learners will practice using a y in its final position to represent the long e or long i sounds.
 Week 10
Lesson 10
Soft C/Soft G
Learners will discover when c and g can make their soft sounds and practice spelling words with soft c and g.
 Week 11
Lesson 11
Magic E
Learners will learn one way that vowels can get "help" to make their long sounds in the middle of a syllable.
 Week 12
Lesson 12
GE/DGE
Learners will practice choosing between "ge" and "dge" for the final /j/ sound (bridge, age).
I am a certified elementary teacher with years of experience in schools. I have also taught ESL for 3 years on-line, and hold an MA in Teaching from Dominican University. I am trained in the Orton-Gillingham approach through IMSE (30-hour) and the Reed Charitable Foundation Classroom Educator (30-hour course).
Homework Offered
Students will receive a spelling practice page with each lesson. The words on this last can be used as a "test" and submitted for feedback directly, or just as additional practice at home.
0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Learners can use the weekly spelling practice page as an informal assessment of their understanding of each concept.
Grades Offered
This class uses strategies aligned with the Science of Reading, which support all learners (including dyslexic learners) in attaining the skills necessary to read.
